Flowmaster Mufflers Drone

My flowmaster mufflers finally arrived and I had them welded onto my 95 gt, they sound great when starting and idle, howeverr...when i apply the amount of pressure on the acceleration to go around 20-30mph the noise doesn't sound good at all. It sounds very bassy and loud but not in a good way, just a constant drone noise, just try saying 'ooooooooo' in a deep back of the throat way and your halfway there.

I perhaps naively thought they would sound similar to this:

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/A...dle_143731.htm

I know that has other mods then just mufflers but surely this droning noise isn't right, it doesn't sound mustang V8ie at all. Plus i feel like my ear drums are going to pop when im driving with the windows down.

Finally, when i put my foot down any nice deep rumble that was there cuts out and becomes pretty much stock or silent.

Do i just need to stop being cheap and go for a full exhaust kit?

I have to say that I have Flowmasters on my car and although they are 50's and not 40's (the louder ones), my cars sounds very similar to the clip you attached, having said that they do drone on a bit on motorways at a constant 40 to 60 mph. All I can assume like you suggested is that you need to change the full system including the headers, all these things have an effect on the sound you are looking for.

Good Luck

Steve

My delta 40 series would drone 30 - 40 mph, just had to go a bit faster or a bit slower.

ive got the delta flow system on my fox, that drones at BANG ON 70mph... right bastid that is.... hopefully changing the rear end gears and trans will shift the rpm at cruise so it wont drone so much...

this is a video clip of the american thunder cat back that I sold... dont know what it sounded like at cruise but it was evil sounding at idle and reving!!!

Thanks for the replies, sounds like it something we all have at certain speeds then, im just unlucky to have it at lower speeds. Shame i dont do much motorway driving as it isn't loud at all when cruising.

I'll have to start saving to change the full exhaust system hehe.

I didn't know that kidrock, i hope the sound changes just enough not to be the annoying one tone lol.

Your right EDGE that does sound evil, pretty badass.

Does sound like a case of resonance so almost anything you do to your mufflers will alter the resonance so that you will get this at a different speed

You could try bigger rubber hangers or if you have a long run of straight pipe, welding in a small bullet silencer to quell the resonance.

I have American Thunders fitted to my car, they had a run-in period and tehre is definitely a drone at about 2,100rpm, otherwise it is very melodic (if you like deep loud throaty exhasts!).

Mine is cat-back, and whilst from inside it can sound a little muted, I have been informed from the outside, when the exhausts are fully heated up, it sounds quite something!
