    Next January, and potential changes to import costs?

    Next January it looks likely that the costs of importing goods, etc from outside the UK may well alter.
    I wonder if anybody has a proper idea of how this will affect prices of spares, purchased from the likes of RockAuto, for example?

    The cost of spares is dependant on;

    The $ to rate at the time, dependant on too many variables. The U.S will be in it's 2nd and 3rd and more Covid spike so it might favour the .
    The cost of shipping, unlikely to change much.
    Import Duty rate into the U.K set by U.K Gov, there's been no suggestion yet if that will alter.
    Vat set by U.K Gov, could go up generally to pay for Covid expenditure or maybe not.

      Yes, I agree..but there will be changes come January next year, about how things like VAT, etc, will be collected. At present the collection of VAT [and customs duty] is pretty seamless. Done once the goods land in the UK.

      That , it appears, may/will change in January.

      There is already concern expressed by small importers regarding where the taxes will in future be collected? It seems at the moment the taxes will be the responsibility of the other end to pay?
      Currently we do not have 'free trade deals' with places like the USA or Japan [which s rumoured to be undergoing negotiation at present?] At present we are operating pretty much to the system agreed via the EU...

        There won't be any tariff changes on January 1st as the UK Government announces, many months ago, that they will mirror the EU external tariffs. Changing tariffs are only a calculation at the end of the day and collection/payment is always done at the clearance stage. Some shippers won't clear your imports until after payment has been made, others pre charge the taxes when you arrange the shipping and others will clear then collect before delivery. That's all been happening for decades. Suppliers like Rockauto shipping out of the USA should not be affected, any changes will only potentially impact the EU27 sourced products from EU27 based companies shipping from an EU27 country.
