Unfortunately, Mick, I think that is a self perpetuating circle that you have landed on.

I am not saying that holding onto a 55 yr old is not better for the environment than the ever churning cycle of new cars. New car production has a massive footprint.

    But you have to go...

Yes, all fair points, Allan / Alastair. By the way, I am not trying to prod and annoy. I find your views very interesting and stuff that I have not thought of.

The intriguing thing is that the Capri folk see this the other way - needs to have an MOT and they wheel the 45 yr old down...

That goes for all policies Alastair. Has to be roadworthy. But you are right. The MOT disciplines - failure of one discipline does not mean it isn't roadworthy and also it needs to be spotted.

Corrosion of a component or body part of the vehicle is quite subjective, even MOT tester to MOT...

Right then - that's it!! The final words - no future.

Fear not - autonomous driving is decades away. We won't see autonomous vehicle in a generation. Fortunately, my autonomy will probably involve a Zimmerframe before self driving vehicles.

    I know I said...

    One to start with.

And I won't meander down the Electric / Hybrid route just now because I have done it to death on another forum and it probably is a bit boring. I will just enlighten you that I had the fortune - yes it was a fortune - to drive the Mach E last week and it is quite a stunning...

    The Motoring Future

So my role within Ford is quite an interesting one and looks into (studies) the future of motoring. I have to research internal Ford pieces but then also look through the web for external stuff that shows up what is coming at us. If you would like a sniff into the future of motoring, I'm quite happy...

  • Wow! What a tale. This is not good from a new motor worth that money. I feel for you but hopefully you are now on the road to recovery.

I don't know people's knowledge here on mechanical stuff - I am sure most of you know more than me! - so not wishing to teach your grandma to suck...

Well, that is something I like about the north and hate the south for. The more relaxed / friendly way of life. In certain areas of course! The population seems to have more time for each other.

I guess it depends on what you classify "many vehicles" qualifying for MOT exemption is. It is a little subjective as we each have a different view. By the way, I don't think there are loads of vehicles now that qualify. But once I point out the stats, you may or may not be shocked. It is...

When did you last see the DVSA pulling vehicles based on quality ? I would have thought that waiting for these or local plod to conduct roadside checks could be a very long wait, if it happens at all. I know that there is a Commercial Vehicle purge every so often but it is hardly regular or...

Yes, and that's where my dismay went further. So I asked the local dealer for the DSR and there is no record of it. So no dealer in the land has the record of mine being serviced.

I probably should have stated that above as this was why I was wondering whether the 1st owner had actually...

    Recorded Service Book

Perhaps it's because I am a dinosaur - but what is wrong with the world ?

Just bought this 18 plate and there is no service book that has been stamped. It's all in the system - the DSR - the Digital Service Record.

We can give you some copies of invoices but not the real things...

    Completely agreed.

These threads are very good if you are undecided and just want a user's opinion rather than the propaganda spelt out by the tyre company.

But it is almost a personal thing.

I know what will happen myself. I read the comments above about Hankook...

Again, agreed with the sentiments you both have conveyed. But you are placing a personal view on road worthiness.

That's not a criticism, by the way. It is what it is. One person's view of quality, whether that is actual quality or operational quality, is different to another person's....

I see what you all are saying. I also stand by the fact that the test is just the minimum requirement for the vehicle to be road worthy - it is not the be all, end all. The vehicles should be looked after all through the year, not just on the day of the test. And then, the test isn't that conclusive...

Thanks for this guidance on tyres. I must admit that the PZeros are an acquired flavour, as I am getting to find out. Good if you like rallying/donutting! Not so great on 2 way streets.

Are these the brand / tyre type that Ford placed on from new ? Why would they place on an extra...

This has been a bit of a hot topic of mine within the other motoring circle I am in - with the Capris. Many of them are now over 40yrs old and mine will be in 4 years time. So should I just exempt the tax or both tax and MOT ?

What Alastair has said is very true. An MOT is only as good...

  • Thank you.

It kind of took a bit of time to find. But I got there in the end!

I have a few bits that I may do. I do like the sound for the Roush axle backs and I hear there is a good place just down the road from me in Colchester, Essex for aftermarket Pony...

  • Hi there - thanks for the welcome note. Yes, I know that this is one of those motors that is referred to by pots. That does make it special.

I also own the other car that is referred to by its engine. A Capri - mine being the 2.8i. I just refer to it as a 6 pot Cologne.

    So...

  • At last!!!!

    I have found one!!

It has only taken me 4 months to find a S550 V8 that I liked and whilst was right for me, seemed to be right for everyone else, such that most of the ones I looked at were sold before being advertised.

    Anyway, I have bought...
